Why People Fail in Network Marketing

In this post, I’ll show some reasons people fail in network marketing and what you can do to avoid such a fate in your business.

I’m sure you’ve at some point wondered if networking marketing is as viable as people make it seem and whether or not it’ll work for you. Or maybe it’s not you; it could be a friend, family member or prospect that has asked you this question.

Whatever the case, I’m going to offer some insights and take an in-depth look into some of the reasons why people fail in network marketing and the steps you can take to avoid such failures in your business.

This post will show you the most important things to do when you begin taking those baby steps in your business and ensure that you get the best bang for your bucks.

Network marketing is an awesome business that has transformed the lives of many in amazing ways

However, it’s not immune from criticism from those who due to mistakes and/or ignorance on their part have experienced failure and instead of looking at how their actions or inactions led to their failure, have resorted to blaming the industry.

So before we look into today’s training, it is important to note that like most things in life, network marketing is an industry that requires work in order for it to work for you.

Now let’s begin and look at some reasons why people fail in network marketing:

False Expectations

The expectations people have are sometimes falsely represented when people initially begin their network marketing journey.

If in a bid to win over a prospect, you exaggerate the benefits that they stand to gain by joining your business, such people may feel that they have failed if/when they don’t meet up with the expectations that they have been given.

On the flip side, if you tell someone exactly how things work and give them a realistic and honest idea of how much they stand to gain, the chances of them not meeting their expectations will be slim or even non-existent.

Unbelief

If you don’t believe in yourself, if you don’t believe that you can make it big in anything, not just network marketing, then it’s never going to happen. How are you going to get prospects to believe in you or in what you’re selling to them if you don’t believe it yourself first?

This is why it is crucial that you absolutely believe in what you’re doing in order to make sales and build your team.

And it’s not just enough to have belief but your belief and confidence in yourself must be over and above the disbelief of others. You must have an overwhelming amount of confidence in yourself even if the people around you do not.

Lack of Ambition and Dedication

With every great achievement in life comes an even greater level of work expended in order to reap rewards. Ask anyone who has made it big and they’ll tell you that a lot of work will be required in the beginning stages of your business before you taste the fruits of your consistent labor.

You can’t have a million dollar dream with a minimum wage work ethic

So it’s important that your passion, drive and work ethic match whatever dreams you have for your business.

Lack of Adequate Training

There are a  plethora of network marketing companies out there and while some have very good training programs, unfortunately, some don’t.

If you feel your company isn’t training you well enough, then you need to look for network marketing gurus that you can learn from

And don’t think that because you’ve done well in brick and mortar businesses, you’ve got nothing else to learn to be successful in network marketing. Network marketing is a whole different ball game from most traditional business out there so you definitely need very good training.

Conclusion

Network marketing isn’t rocket science and if you apply the steps above, you’ll definitely find yourself on the path to cracking the network marketing code and get it to really work for you.

How to Get your Prospects Interested in your Business

In this post, I’m going to share tips on how to get your prospects excited about your business, service or products. I understand that it can be frustrating when you try to share your services or products to people and they’re apathetic to it or they can’t just understand what you’re talking about.

The good news is there are some amazing sales tips that if well implemented can help you get your prospects to listen to what you have to say.

Here’s the thing; your prospects aren’t really concerned about what you’re selling. The only thing they’re thinking is “what’s in it for me?”

The moment you understand this, the more effective your prospecting will be and so I’m going to tell you what to say so that your prospects will:

  • Listen to You
  • Get Excited
  • Become Inquisitive

In a nutshell, people couldn’t care less about what you’re offering, on the contrary, they’re only concerned about how it adds VALUE to their lives without which they will not patronize you.

If you’re really interested in getting prospects excited about your business or service, then you definitely have to speak to the need, wants and desires that they have.

Sales Tip

Stop talking features and start talking benefits. Don’t know what the benefits of your business or products are? I’ll show you. Here’s an example.

Example 1

If for example, you’re in health and wellness with a basic 3 Step System that can help with weight loss, telling your prospect how amazing your product is because it’s a simple 3 step system is going to make them yawn and get them disinterested. You know why? It’s a feature; it won’t interest your prospect because it doesn’t tell them how it will benefit them.

So think more about the benefits of your products and who it’s meant for.

Benefit: An easy weight loss strategy for busy people who don’t have the luxury of trying out complex weight loss plans or diets

This will obviously help a busy and ultra-mobile person so you could say something like;

“Our simple but very effective 3 step system can help you lose weight and release you from the grim task of counting calories or making and sticking to complicated recipes that take aeons to make.”

Assuming that’s your prospect you’ll most likely get them to listen.

Sales Tip – You Don’t Want To Come Across as Salesy

This is a no-no because you’re going to feel bad about yourself whether or not you make any sales. But when you’re genuinely interested in what people really want and make yourself the go-to guy when they need a solution, you won’t only get more loyal and happy customers, you’ll also feel good about yourself and about what you do.

People need to see a clear picture of how your products can add value to their lives and it is your duty to paint that picture

Networking Tips: Getting your Customers to Market your Brand

Marketing is one aspect of business that every brand must give maximum attention. If the consumers do not hear about the business, the business has FAILED; regardless of how awesome the product is.

In today’s world, there are lots of ways to go about marketing, there’s TV ads, radio ads, physical advertising, you may even choose to advertise on platforms like Facebook and Google. The most effective way to tell people who you are, however, is consumer marketing (this is when your consumers become brand advocates).

Consumer marketing is the most effective form of marketing and here are a few reasons why:

  • There is transparency (the consumer doesn’t get any profit from the sale of the product), so there is bound to be less resistance.
  • Consumer marketing is super cheap because you do not pay your consumers to market the brand. They do it out of loyalty (and loyalty is free).
  • Your customers get a sense of belonging; like they’re a part of your community. This is worth a lot.
  • Your customers won’t be talking to random strangers, they’ll be talking to people within their circle (friends’ and family) and people are more inclined to listen to their friends than strangers (marketers).

In creating your brand, you shouldn’t be complacent with just getting sales, you must strive to retain your customers and earn their loyalty till they start telling their friends about you. It takes a bit of conscious effort, but it’s possible if you take the right approach.

Here’s a guideline on how you can make your consumers your greatest marketing agents:

Create a System

Have you ever seen a toddler running? Well, the answer is no! This is because there is a stage for everything and brand promotion is no exception to this rule. You don’t expect your newly converted customers to start telling their friends and family how awesome you are just yet.

There’s a sequence which you must follow which is:

  • Convert your leads
  • Retain your customers by giving them an outstanding experience (this would make them excited)
  • Earn their loyalty and create a community around the brand/business.
  • Subtly channel their loyalty to brand advocacy.

Your brand must be able to follow this sequence if you’re going to earn the loyalty required to turn them into your brand’s ambassadors. You don’t want to be ‘too straightforward’ in doing this, you want to make it appear as natural as possible.

Create a community

It’s easier to sell a community than a business. You should create a community around your brand to deepen your brand ambassadors’ loyalties.  People will be less inclined to sell your business; you’ll have to give them a means of personal investment in the brand if they’re going to become brand ambassadors.

Every act of consumer participation increases the overall visibility of the business. You may create a forum around your business or social media channels to foster active participation among your customers.

Take advantage of Customer Feedback

The 21st-century prospect is highly informed. No one believes marketers anymore, they’ll rather hear of the brand’s/product’s authenticity from past customers. Consumer feedback is another way to get your customers to market to help in your marketing efforts.

Following these tips, you will be able to create a system that fosters consumer brand advocacy. As said earlier, you mustn’t be too forward with this process so as not to spook your customers or make them feel pressured.

Social Media Marketing: Getting Content for Your Social Media Channels

Content is KING! This is a popular saying in the digital marketing community because the content you feed your subscribers and fans on your social media channels determines your success as a brand. The reason people visit certain pages for news is that these brands have earned the trust of these followers by delivering amazing and credible content over and over again.

Whatever your niche is, your brand’s success depends on the content you provide your followers on your social media channels. The aim is to build a community and the sooner you realise this, the better for you.

Here are some tips on creating outstanding content on your social media pages:

Variety spices everything up

Ever heard the saying, “variety is the spice of life?” It is most applicable in post planning. To keep your subscribers interested, you’ll have to mix things up a bit. If you are in the health/fitness niche for example, then daily health tips mixed with health quotes will go a long way in keeping your fans engaged.

Comedy is also important in keeping the spirit alive as people will always visit a place where they can have a good laugh. So take advantage of it and include some humour in your content.

However, in spicing things up, you don’t want to compromise relevance so make sure you stay true to the course.

Show, don’t just tell!

Telling people about your brand is not enough, you’ll have to show them. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and statistics have shown that the brain processes imagery 60,000 times faster than text.  You would be missing out on a lot if you do not use videos and high-quality images on your site. Plus, videos also help your subscribers remember more of whatever message you have conveyed.

The benefits of using videos on your site are not restricted to cognitive purposes only, videos make your audience relate with you on a more personal level hence, building your brand’s credibility and earning the trust of your fans.

Be Organized

Proper planning precedes success. In creating posts for your channels, you must be well-organised. There’s no space for randomisation if you want to do a good job. Get a calendar; this is going to point out the type of content to be shared on your page and also the time. For example, you could have a questionnaire every Friday evening and a quiz every Wednesday.

However, getting a calendar is not enough; you’ll now have to work on filling it up with superb content.

Get your fans Actively Involved

A common occurrence in recent times is businesses placing so much attention on ‘getting content out there’ that they neglect the consumers’ need to be engaged which brought them on the platform in the first place. When you constantly inundate your followers with information about your product and services, it begins to sound like a lecture.

One surefire way to ensure that you’re delivering the right content to your followers is to make them part of the content generation process. Ask for their contributions or set up quiz competitions with giveaway prizes. By doing this, you not only engage your followers, you’ll be earning their loyalty as well.

Social Media Marketing: Building a Strong Connection with Subscribers

It is no longer news that social media marketing is the most effective form of digital marketing right now. We see brands take advantage of this ‘Goldmine’ every day, some more than others.

Consumers are overwhelmed with an enormous amount of information every day and this initiates a filtration process where consumers attempt to make things less complicated by sticking to a few trusted or ‘preferred’ brands for content (just as we have few friends in real life).

In establishing your brand on social media, you’ll need to create a strong connection with your subscribers. The aim is to be the ‘go-to guy’ they call when they need ‘assistance’; it’s called branding.

Follow these guidelines to make your brand an authority in your niche by connecting with subscribers on a deep level.

Make them a part of the process

The primary objective of social media marketing is to keep your subscribers actively engaged. What better way to achieve this than making them a part of the content generation process. This way, you reduce your workload by ‘outsourcing’ some part of your content generation and more importantly, you give your fans a sense of purpose and partnership.

Also, by making customers a part of the process, you’ll be forced to listen to them. This will let you know how they think and what their needs are.

Come off as Professional

As much as you want to connect with subscribers, you must remember that you are a brand first so you must first earn their trust by posting genuine and unique content (Something they can’t get elsewhere). When people perceive your brand as the ‘real deal’ your social value increases in their eyes and they want to associate with you.

Being professional begins with: your profile description, the quality of your images, and the quality of content you post. Everyone wants to identify with something mind-blowing, so, you must make your brand mind-blowing if you want to connect with people.

Be genuine in your interests

The need to connect with your fans must be genuine or else they’ll spot you from a mile away and any chance of earning their trust is lost.

You want to put a face on that brand because no one likes to deal with a robot, they’re boring. So ensure that you can relate with your subscribers on a personal level. Use terms they are familiar with and don’t just tell them about your products, show them! That’s why videos are so awesome ass people can see what you’re talking about.

Reward your customers

Nothing wins a friend faster than a gift. It’s basic psychology. A simple gift will go a long way in keeping your customers loyal. It doesn’t even have to be monetary, sometimes acknowledgement is all you need to make someone feel special, appreciated and committed to your brand.

Conclusion

It’s not rocket science to connect with customers. In social media marketing, being social will take you a long way with your subscribers. The sooner you realize that the people interacting with your brand have human needs like a sense of connection and purpose, the more effective your social media marketing will be.

Network Marketing Tips That Will Guarantee your Success

You probably have a fairly good idea of what network marketing (A.K.A  multilevel marketing or direct sales) is about. – A frenetic salesperson persuading you into believing how you can become rich by getting yourself, your friends and their friends to trade a product with him.

The above scenario couldn’t be further from what network marketing is in reality. It’s neither a get-rich scheme nor a hobby. On the contrary, it’s a chance for financial advancement by running your own part-time or full-time business.

But the big question is, what does it really take to make it in this industry? In answering that question, I’m going to offer some tips for succeeding at it.

  1. Choose wisely

There are some important features you should look out for in a new opportunity. The first is stability. Questions like the age of the company, the quality of the products or services on offer should also be asked. In addition to the age of the company, you should also have a fairly good idea of the integrity of the company. As well as you can, find out the experience of the CEO in the networking marketing industry.

Thirdly, take a good look at the pay plan. How fair and even is the overall distribution of profits? This is very important as it will determine how you will get paid.

Number four is the timing and momentum. Consider where the company is at the time you intend joining and make sure it’s growing. And lastly, you should take a look at the training, support and business systems.

  1. Practice what you’re taught

To be successful, you have to be willing to listen to and learn from the experts. The network marketing industry is structured in a way that the successes of the veterans in your company is determined to an extent by how well they can help you succeed. So they’re always more than ready to teach you how the system works. The actions your mentor took to succeed can be replicated but you have to be open to learning what you’re taught.

  1. Get yourself online

The importance of the internet in your network marketing efforts cannot be overemphasized. This is why it should absolutely be your main marketing tool. The fact that you’re reading these tips online should be another reason why you should get your business online. You must have a website and set it up with autoresponders so that when you get leads, you can easily follow up on that person with the help of the autoresponder. One of the most crucial ingredients to hitting it big in this industry is follow up and thanks to automation on the internet, following up doesn’t have to be as inconsistent and cumbersome as it once was.

  1. Don’t quit your main job…yet

Don’t ever quite you main job unless you’re absolutely sure that the income you’re getting is comfortably steady. ensure you’ve been with the company for a considerable period.

Lastly, make sure the money you’re making is above the income you’re earning from your job before you quit.

Side Hustles You Can Start With No Money

Beginning a new side hustle is more often than not an expensive experience but if you dig deep, you’ll discover that low-cost ideas still exist for aspiring or lean entrepreneurs with unique and valuable talent.

Have a firm knowledge of the sellable kills you currently have, recommends Holly Reisem Hanna, founder of career blog, The Work at Home Woman. Make a list of your previous jobs, trainings and educational achievements to help you take cognizance of vocational interests and patterns that can help you in your search for your new business venture.

“In this exercise, you want to go deep,” she says, “so include what you liked and didn’t like about past jobs, training and schooling.”

If you need more small business ideas to get going, you definitely want to consider these tested and trusted business ideas you can start without any immediate costs:

Freelancing

A lot more businesses and companies are turning to freelancers to reduce their in-house costs and this presents an opportunity for freelance designers, writers, animators etc. an opportunity to share their talents with a wide range of clients.

Pet services

The American Pet Products Association, says that pet owners in 2016 spent an estimated $66.8 Billion on their four-legged friends, with almost 6 billion of that amount going towards grooming and boarding.

If you have a passion for pets, you can start by rendering a pet-sitting or dog-walking service for little to no capital at all. You can then go further by becoming a trainer although you will have to invest in a certification to give your business more credibility.

Personal training

The fitness craze reached a crescendo in 2017 and considering the fact that you can start out without any real costs, it makes sense to cash in on it if you are athletically blessed. You can begin by concentrating on body-resistance exercises in parks and other public spaces. You can of course, take your hustle to a new level by investing in weights, resistance bands and other exercise gear to fast track your clients’ progress and have them coming back to you for more.

Although there are no state or federal laws that control who can or cannot call themselves a personal trainer, you are advised to get certified by an authoritative industry organization. This will usually involve some costs but it’s definitely worth it. You’ll also want to have liability insurance in case any of your clients suffer injuries during training.

Manual work

On a daily basis, home repairs and maintenance have a way of accumulating so if you have a natural inclination towards house work, you may want to consider putting yourself up as a master of manual labor. Begin by gaining expertise in a particular niche like landscaping or painting to help you build some credibility among clients.

Consulting and teaching

Your most valuable assets are the skills and knowledge you already have. So you may want to consider selling your well-honed skills if you are a math guru, musical wonderkid or grammar guru. Although you may have to spend a few bucks to publicize your services beyond your family members or social media  friends.

But entrepreneur beware

However, it is recommended that you avoid working in industries like healthcare because the standard of operation in such areas is generally very high thus making the guidelines hard to navigate. Even outside highly regulated industries, there are some common dangers to avoid when pursing your side hustle.

  • Don’t put your main job in jeopardy – In most cases, you’ll need to have a full-time job to help you generate income while your new hustle is gearing to take off. It’s also important you don’t allow your side hustle adversely affect your main job. You might also want to recheck your contract and ensure that there isn’t a non-compete clause signed with your full-time employer.
  • Have a good look at certificates and licensing – It is important that you keep overhead costs low but there are some corners that you just cannot afford to cut. Even if you’re starting a business off your skills like baking or hair dressing, it is important that you follow regulatory guidelines for your industry. If you intend operating your business from home, ensure that your home insurance covers whatever incident may arise from the operation of the business.

10 Side Hustles for Senior Citizens

Today, we’re going to talk about the top 10 side hustles for senior citizens.

I always said that I will never retire.

Now, that doesn’t mean I will keep doing the work I have always done, but I will keep my entrepreneur mindset and continue making “side-cash” to help offset the rising costs of life. And to be able to live a fruitful and wonderful life.

Just sitting around watching the dandelions grow is not my idea of a fun, retired life. I would be willing to wager that 80%+ of other seniors would agree.

To help you keep pace with the “young-uns,” I am providing you with 10 side hustles for senior citizens.

Side Hustle #1: Freelance Writing

Since I am a copywriter, I had to put this at the top of the list. Believe me, if you have any writing skills, you are needed desperately. Just to give you an idea, I work full time writing and I make a great income.

There are a variety of websites you can use as a medium to get started. You may want to create an account at:

Just do a search for online writing jobs.  You could even start your own website that promotes your writing services.  Another great thing to do is reach out to people you know who are editors or writers and see if that have any side gigs you could help them with.

Side Hustle #2: Blogging

As a senior citizen, you have many experiences that you can share with the world. One of the ways you can do that is by purchasing a domain and hosting. You then start a blog in any niche area that you have experience with.

But how do you make money? You put affiliate ads on the blog and if you get real creative, you could sell your own digital products.

You could write about your family, life experience, work experience, favorite past times, hobbies, or anything else that interests you.

Side Hustle #3: Do Tasks

There is a website where people have discovered they can make a great second income doing tasks. You can earn money by running tasks like getting a gallon of milk for a person who lives nearby, or there are tasks that involve online research or data entry.  The name of the website is TaskRabbit. You can check it out here.

You could also ask your friends and neighbors if they need help with anything.  Another option is to be a virtual assistant online.

Side Hustle #4: Tutoring

There are students from 1st to 16th grade who need assistance understanding certain subjects. You may wonder why I said 16th grade… I am counting 4 years of college.

You can simply run an ad in your local newspaper, and I would wager your phone will begin ringing from parents and students looking for a dependable tutor.

Side Hustle #5: Be A Referee Or An Umpire

Nearly every community has some kind of sports leagues running. Be it school sports, softball leagues or even beach volleyball leagues, these all need officials to ensure that the game is played fair.

You can get paid cash with each game you officiate. It may require taking a class or 2, but there are people making a great second income by officiating sporting events.

Side Hustle #6: Open An eBay Store

If you have a knack for “wheeling and dealing,” you may find that opening and managing an eBay store is the perfect side hustle.

You can purchase items from auctions, garage sales or even great sale items from retail outlets. Mark them up and list them on your online eBay store.  You can even buy items on eBay and resell them on eBay for a nice profit.

Side Hustle #7: Publish eBooks

In this era of digital reading…

  • Kindle
  • Nook
  • Etc…

anyone can be an author and earn royalties by just writing and publishing eBooks. Tell the world about your life, your experiences or train them in something you have ample knowledge about.

Side Hustle #8: Pets

If you have a love for dogs, cats and other forms of pets, there is a huge call for people to contract walking or grooming services. Go walk Rover or groom Frisky and earn good cash doing so.  You could also do pet sitting, which can be fun and profitable.

Side Hustle #9: Music Lessons

Do you play an instrument?

  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Drums
  • Cello
  • Etc…

Maybe you are a great singer? There are people ready to pay you to teach them how to play an instrument or sing. Just run an ad and standby as the phone begins ringing.

Side Hustle #10: Sell Photo Images

Do you love taking photographs? You do know that many people are searching daily for images to use on their websites and in other places. They are willing to pay to use these images.

There are many websites where you can download your images, put a price on them and people will pay to use or purchase your image. You will just pay a small percentage to the site.

Some of the sites you may consider are:

Conclusion

Maybe that pension is a little lower than your bills. And we all know that Social Security is difficult to survive on.

It makes good sense to pick up a side hustle. While there are many other side hustles for senior citizens, I found these to be the top 10 ideas.

What do you think? Do you have any questions? What type of side gig do you have? You can post any and all comments below. Thank you for stopping by and be sure to share this with all your senior friends and family.

Make Money Shoveling Snow: A Great Side Hustle

Today, I’m going to educate you about how to make money shoveling snow. Winter is almost here.  Depending on where you live, this presents a great way to make money!

That’s right, whenever it snows there is a huge opportunity to earn extra cash.  If you’re willing to hustle, you can shovel people’s driveways, porches, and walkways for extra cash.  Although it’s a labor-intensive job, it can be very profitable.  While this opportunity is great for kids, it can also be an awesome side hustle for young adults.

As a kid, I used to do this every winter.  I grew up in small town Maine.  We got a ton of snow each winter.  Whenever it snowed, I would reach out to neighbors to see if they needed me to shovel their walkway, porch or driveway.  Although not everyone was interested in my services, some people took me up on my offer.

I could make $50 to $100 in half a day’s work. That was a lot of money as a kid.  Keep in mind this was in the 1980s and early 1990s.  I’m sure that if you were organized and hustled, you could make even more money than that today.  Here are a few tips to help you do this.

9 Tips to Make Money Shoveling Snow

# 1 Contact People Ahead of Time – In the early fall, contact everyone you know to see if they will let you shovel their snow for them throughout the winter.  Try to lock in as many customers as you can, ahead of time.  That way, when the snow hits the ground, you are off to the races!

# 2 Build Up Your Customer List – Whenever you shovel snow for someone, add them to your customer list.  Be sure to send them a hand written thank you note for hiring you.  In addition, stay in touch with these people throughout the year, so they don’t forget about you or hire a competitor.

# 3 Go the Extra Mile – When you are shoveling snow at a client’s home or business, be sure you go the extra mile.  Do an exceptional job.  Treat it as if it was your own house. Do things you aren’t paid to do, the little added touch.  This will go a long way in keeping your customers happy.

# 4 Use Tools to Help You – As a kid, invest in a good shovel, maybe even some equipment such as a used snow blower. This will let you work smart and help you get more done in less time.  As an adult, you might want to even buy a snow plow for your truck.

# 5 Team up with Someone Else – If you know someone who plows people’s driveways, reach out to them and see if they will hire you to do all the little work, such as clearing walkways and porches. This lets you tap into their customer base.  This is one of my best tips.

# 6 Ask for Referrals – Whenever you deal with a client, and they are happy with your services, be sure you ask them for referrals.  Ask them for two people and two businesses in the local area they know who might want to hire someone to help them with snow removal.

# 7 Get Your Name Out There – Be willing to advertise and have some marketing materials to help you promote your new side hustle. This includes flyers, business cards, brochures, a website, a Facebook page, etc.  Realize your real business is FINDING and KEEPING customers, not just shoveling snow.

# 8 Visit Local Businesses – Another great tip to find more work is to visit local businesses in your area.  Focus on the “mom and pop” type businesses with walkways and porches.  This would be a great little niche to focus on, plus you can probably earn more money per job by working with local businesses, than just with residential properties.

# 9 Be Reliable – It’s important that you show up on time.  Your customer needs to be able to count on you and know you will do a good job.  If you aren’t reliable, they will hire someone else.

I hope you enjoyed these 9 tips on how to make money shoveling snow.

10 Reasons Why Shoveling Snow is a Good Side Hustle

  1. It’s seasonal
  2. You can earn cash money
  3. It’s good exercise
  4. You can earn good money per hour
  5. There is a high demand for it since most people don’t want to do it
  6. Very little overhead to get started
  7. Very little ongoing costs
  8. Great part-time gig
  9. Work as much or as little as you want
  10. Works great with a land scaping or lawn service business

Final Thoughts

There you have it folks.  These are some of my best tips on how to make money shoveling snow.  I think this is a great side hustle for any kid, teenager or young adult.  Like anything else in life, you need a game plan and you need to work hard. You get out what you put in.

Some states have a container deposit.  This is extra money you pay for the item when you buy beverages in glass, plastic or glass bottles.  Normally, it’s about 5 or 10 cents per item.  It varies by state. This money can then be “redeemed” when the item is used up and returned to a recycling center or redemption center.

As of October 2010, 11 different states have a container deposit.  Those states are California, Connecticut Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Vermont. If you live in one of those 11 states, this might be a perfect side hustle for you, especially if you are a teenager or kid.

My Experience

I grew up in small town Maine.  As a child and teenager, we would collect bottles and cans on the side of the road whenever we could.  We would also save up the bottles, cans and glass in our own homes.

We would try to fill up several garbage bags worth of cans and bottles. Once we had several bags of recyclables, we would visit one of the redemption centers in our town and exchange our bottles and cans for five cents each.

At five cents per item, it might not sound like a ton of money to an adult.  However, it can add up pretty quickly.  Find 100 bottles and get five cents each and you would have $5. Find 1,000 cans and redeem them at a nickel each and you would have $50 cash.

I remember one time I saved I bottles for a few months and cashed them in for a few hundred dollars.  I felt like I had just won the lottery.  I used the money to buy a new bike.  A few hundred dollars isn’t life changing for most adults, but as a kid, it makes you feel rich!

I also remember a fundraiser we did for our high school wrestling team.  About 20 of us worked really hard over the weekend collecting bottles on the side of the road and visiting people’s homes looking for donations of bottles.  We ended up raising close to $1000 that weekend for our wrestling team.  It was a lot of fun and definitely worth our time.

Why You Should Do This

Whether you are an adult or teenager, you should save up your bottles, glass and cans and redeem them for cash.  It’s just smart money.  It takes very little effort on your own, just a little discipline.

Listed below are a few simple things you can do to work smart and make even more money recycling soda cans, plastic bottles and glass for cash.

#1 Return other people’s recyclable items for them. Reach out to everyone you know and offer to take their bottles and cans to the redemption center for them, in exchange for a percentage of the cash. Most people are busy and would love to save the time to do something else.  If you could find 10-20 people to do this with, your commission could be pretty significant.

# 2 Ask people you know to save their bottles for you and let them know you will pick them up once a month.  Ask your close friends and family, especially grandma, if she will save her cans and bottles for you.  You’ll never know if you don’t ask.

# 3 Find a few busy roads where people litter lots of cans and bottles, and pick them up.  Of course, be safe, wear a reflector vest, and have adult supervision, so you don’t get hit by a car.

# 4 Make it fun and have a contest with a few of your close friends to see who can collect the most cans, bottles and plastics in a given month.  The competitive spirit will force you to come up with creative ways to win.

My final tip is to save the money you get from the container deposits and reinvest it into other side hustles.  Use the money to buy a used lawn mower, so you can mow yards.  Use the money to start a lemonade stand.  Use the money to buy items at yard sales and resell them on eBay. Or, put it in your savings account or pay off debt. Simply put, use your hard-earned cash for seed money and watch your income grow.

Final Thoughts

What are your thoughts?  Did you grow up in one of these 11 states that have container deposits?  If so, did you collect bottles, cans and glass to recycle them for cash?  If you did, leave a comment below and tell us what your experience was like.  I look forward to hearing from you.
